ABYC Couples' Fun Race
Sailboats & Powerboats
The 2006 Couples' Fun Race is Saturday, February 18.
- For the sailboats, the racecourse involves the
three legs of a triangle using the PHRF race buoys. The specific course will
be announced at the Skippers Meeting. Each sailboat starts whenever it
wants, with the goal being to cross the finish line as close as possible
to 2 p.m. Once she starts the race, each sailboat must sail a proper course,
and must keep her sails fully hoisted and her anchors fully out of the
water.
- For the powerboats, the goal is to predict
which sailboats will place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The three best predictions win
the powerboat part of the event. A powerboat may subsequently revise its
predictions, and conceivably can win more than one of three prizes if the
previous and revised predictions place among the best three. All predictions
must be communicated by VHF to the race committee at least five minutes
prior to the scheduled end of the race. If more than one boat submits the
same prediction, ties will be broken by favoring the earlier received
prediction.
- Any type of powerboat and sailboat may participate in
the race as long at she can safely navigate the racecourse. Powerboats
can use whatever electronics they wish. Sailboats may use no electronics
other than VHF.
- Powerboats can go wherever they want, but
naturally must be courteous and follow right-of-way rules. The committee
boat will be at the finish line when sailboats finish, but not necessarily
before then. The committee boat will compete in the race as a powerboat.
- It is the responsibility of the occupants of each
boat (power and sail) to convince the race committee that their boat has
some multiple of “a couple” onboard. Creative arguments are welcomed.
Entry fee is $10 per boat, which will be charged to the
skipper’s ABYC account. For sailboats and powerboats, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
prizes are a bottle of quality champagne, a bottle of excellent wine, and a
six-pack of beer. The skippers’ meeting is in the clubhouse the day of the
race at 10:30 a.m.
Race participants and non-participants alike are invited
to meet for dinner at 7 p.m. that evening at the Riverside by the Bay
Restaurant where race prizes will be awarded and stories told. A separate room
has been reserved for ABYC. Phone (386-7363)
Susan Wilhelm for your dinner reservation. Contact Darlene or Al
Oosterhof (926-8962) for any further information related to the race.
